Classic Fall Wardrobe Staples
Last month we spent a week with family in the Adirondacks, and I haven’t stopped thinking about an older woman I saw in the little mountain town.
She was probably in her early 80s.
I don’t know whether she lived there, or if she had driven in from Vermont or Maine or New York City to the same cabin she’d been visiting since she was a girl.
It didn’t matter. Her style stopped me immediately — classic, relaxed, simple but not boring.
She was picking wildflowers at the side of the road in dark jeans, a fisherman sweater, and a printed scarf folded into a triangle over her hair.
Everything she was wearing looked like it could have been in her closet for years (maybe decades), but it all felt fresh.
Her outfit — and how easily she carried herself — made me want to ask her: Who are you and what can you tell me about life?
Here are classic fall wardrobe staples inspired by her timeless style, and a few ways I would wear them:
A vintage-inspired Fair Isle sweater.
Suede fringe loafers.
A pretty plaid top.
This cardigan in almond.
An elevated cashmere henley.
A really good belt in brown suede (the black leather, too).
An organic cotton bandana in a print I love.
Beautiful suede boots. I have an older mid-calf pair, and they are a favorite.
